Preventing Duplicate Content Issues
This is a free guide written to highlight ways that you can help prevent google from finding duplicate content within your site. Duplicate content doesn’t necessarily mean you have copied someone else’s work it can also mean that google has found several different links pointing to the same content.
For example some of the most common ways of allowing google to find duplicate content is by link building to a certain page in different styles, so for example
domainname.com ” title=”http://Domainname.com/php ” target=”_blank”>Domainname.com/php
www.domainname.com
If you type in each url they will take you to the same page and display the homepage but if google follows those links it will be taken to the same content and think it is duplicate content.
At this moment in time there isn’t an automatic fix for duplicate content issues but google has implemented different ways in which you can help prevent your website from being penalised.
If you rely solely on search engine optimization to rank highly and to get traffic then I suggest you do some tests and research on your site as I’m sure you will find some duplicate content.
One way to check and see if you have any duplicate pages listed in google is by looking and seeing what pages are indexed.
You can prevent duplicate content by giving google hints, if you link build only link build in one format so for example I would use directorysubmissions.eu rather than www.directorysubmissions.eu.
Google has also provided a feature in the webmasters tool section which is free to use and provide valuable information on your site. Another great way to prevent duplicate content is by writing a robots.txt file and solving the problem before it happens.
Google has also released a new element which you can add to the top of you page and is designed only for google. The canonical element will tell google depending on how it came to your page what url you want to use, this is a good method to use when preventing duplicate content.
